LAST week, Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu did the right thing when he suspended all mining activities in the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR), and at the same time revoked all small-scale mining permits, in the aftermath of the deadly landslide at an old mining site in the village of Ucab in Itogon, Benguet.
Days later, Cimatu made a similar move when he suspended all quarrying activities in Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao and Caraga regions. This was in reaction to the landslide in Naga City, Cebu, which, like that in Itogon, took dozens of lives.
