(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines — A Chinese crew member was confirmed dead after a sand carrier vessel, MV Hong Hai 16, capsized off the coast of Malawaan village in the town of Rizal, Occidental Mindoro on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 15, prompting a large-scale maritime search and rescue operation led by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The vessel, manned by 25 crew members—13 Filipinos and 12 Chinese nationals—overturned under moderate sea conditions at approximately 5:20 p.m., according to the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) in San Jose. The PCG was alerted by Bantay Dagat Rizal and swiftly mobilized multiple response teams, including specialized divers and marine environmental protection units.
