THE Philippine government may be forced to increase public spending to cushion the economic blow from newly announced US tariffs, potentially derailing efforts to narrow the budget deficit, a Fitch Group unit said.

"The likelihood of the government having to incur a larger fiscal deficit has risen significantly against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical uncertainty," BMI Country Risk & Industry Research said in a report on Wednesday.
