Why automakers are shifting from full EVs to hybrids

IN the early 2020s, the automotive industry predicted that the shift to electric vehicles (EVs) would happen rapidly, resulting in several carmakers announcing plans to transition into fully electric brands by 2030 or earlier.

However, along the way, something changed. By 2024, many of these automakers that aggressively committed to a full-EV future started rolling back their plans, reintroducing hybrids (HEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) as a bridge to electrification.
