META Platforms has begun testing a crowd-sourced fact-checking system across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, marking a shift away from its previous reliance on third-party fact-checkers. The new feature, called Community Notes, was introduced on March 18 and allows users to flag and rate misleading content.

The system, as reported by Mike Robuck, the US editor at Mobile World Live on March 14, is based on a model used by Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter), where contributors provide additional context to potentially false or misleading posts. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta chief executive, has embraced this approach as a way to scale content moderation while moving away from external fact-checking organizations.
