THIS month is the 39th anniversary of the People Power Revolution of Feb. 25, 1986. But people should also remember the events that happened during the First Quarter of 1970 and other related events because they may well be the prelude that ushered in what we call the People Power Era.
After what was often described as one of the dirtiest elections at that time, Ferdinand E. Marcos took his oath for his second term as president on Rizal Day, Dec. 30, 1969, as mandated by the Constitution of 1935. The inaugural was graced by the presence of US Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, the sort of thing that further agitated the activists who lament our dependence on America. The students welcomed him with demonstrations, but they were met violently by the police with truncheons.
