ON the scale of good faith, the "National Rally for Peace" by the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) last Jan. 13 at the Luneta must rear its ugly head. For a mammoth undertaking promoted as one for achieving "national unity," what the event accomplished was the exact opposite: instant national polarization. Nothing attests to this more clearly and expresses it in such a succinct, instant manner than the published assessment by former senator Leila de Lima: "1.8 million (the number of attendance claimed by the INC at the rally), yes, maybe, but still the minority. The majority are Catholics."
Of the major religions in the country, one account puts the figures at 76.8 percent Catholic, 6.4 percent Islam and 2.6 percent INC.
