MELBOURNE, Australia — Best-selling British author Neil Gaiman denied on Wednesday that he had ever engaged in nonconsensual sex after a magazine this week published allegations that he had sexually assaulted several women.

The 64-year-old author of "The Sandman" comic book series and novel "American Gods" was responding to a New York Magazine article that detailed accusations of assault, abuse and coercion from eight women. Four of the allegations had been broadcast in a Tortoise Media podcast in July.
