GERMANY — American leadership on Ukraine is "critical" and continued assistance for Kyiv is key, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Wednesday, a day ahead of the expected announcement of a major new US military aid package.

Austin is to convene a meeting of dozens of Ukraine's supporters at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Thursday, the last such talks before President-elect Donald Trump — who has been skeptical of assistance for Kyiv — takes office on January 20.
