AS the new year begins, we often find ourselves reflecting on the past and planning for the future. For many Filipinos, Jan. 9 also marks the Feast of the Black Nazarene—a time of devotion, prayer and pilgrimage. Yet, while millions gather for this tradition, we must ask: Do we really know what prayer is and how to pray?

Sadly, there are some who misuse these celebrations by doing unholy activities, revelries, and even intoxication. What was meant to be a solemn time of communion with God can turn into empty rituals. This begs the question: Is our prayer life truly meaningful? More importantly, do we pray in the way God intended?
