KUALA LUMPUR — Since the Covid-19 pandemic began to subside in the past few years (although there seem to be signs of a resurgence recently, with anecdotal reports of quite a number of cases of reinfection), the economic growth rates in Southeast Asia have been touted as among the fastest in the world. Meanwhile, some of the governments of Southeast Asian countries have understandably and opportunistically been singing the praises of their economic recovery efforts.

However, traveling around Southeast Asia, one often sees and hears (at least do) that while the socioeconomic situation is not as dire as during the pandemic, small and medium business owners are still lamenting about the difficulties of doing business. Similarly, while workers no longer face the daily uncertainty they endured during the pandemic, many still sing a sorrowful tune about the challenges of making ends meet.
