Macau marks the 25th anniversary of handover from Portugal to Chinese rule with a flag raising ceremony on Dec. 20, 2024. Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai, who was born in China's southern Guangdong province and speaks fluent Portuguese, attended the ceremony with officials from Macau. China's President Xi Jinping arrived in Macau on Dec. 18 to mark a quarter century of Beijing's rule over the former Portuguese enclave, and is likely during his three-day visit to urge further diversification from its casino industry. Xi will attend the anniversary ceremony and the inauguration of Sam later in the day.
