IN his column on Wednesday, Dec. 18, our columnist Marlen Ronquillo lamented the substantial loss of agricultural land in the Philippines due to commercial and residential development and suggested that the recycling of legislators with the new Congress that will be installed with the May 2025 elections presents an opportunity for the passage of a strict law banning such conversion. We agree with Marlen's rational observation that the wholesale loss of agricultural land severely undermines the country's larger goal of attaining food security and that Congress should indeed take action to address this.
