CHINA on Friday warned the Philippines of stronger countermeasures in response to what it called increasing provocations in the South China Sea. Senior Col. Wu Qian, a spokesman for China's Ministry of National Defense, qccused the Philippines of causing disturbances in various areas with the support and encouragement of the United States.

HUMAN trafficking remains a huge problem in the country despite the progress in government efforts to eradicate it, France-based human rights advocate Zita Cabais said Saturday. During a roundtable discussion with The Manila Times, Cabais said Filipino workers are vulnerable to labor trafficking because of poverty and a lack of education. Cabais, a recipient of the 2024 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO), is a trafficking survivor who has transformed her life of hardship into a powerful advocacy for workers' rights in France. She was among the 13 honorees of the 2024 PAFIOO recognized by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for bringing pride to the Philippines and Filipinos overseas.

South Korean lawmakers on Saturday impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed martial law bid, with the opposition declaring a "victory of the people." The vote took place as hundreds of thousands took to the streets of Seoul in rival rallies for and against Yoon, who launched a failed attempt to impose martial law on Dec. 3. Out of 300 lawmakers, 204 voted to impeach the president on allegations of insurrection, while 85 voted against. Three abstained, with eight votes nullified.

BARANGAY Ginebra guns for its third straight win when it battles foreign guest squad Eastern in the main game of an explosive double header in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner's Cup on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. The Gin Kings tangle with the Hong Kong ball club at 7:30 p.m., following the 5 p.m. collision between San Miguel Beer and Blackwater. Ginebra subdued NLEX, 109-100, on Thursday, before bludgeoning Phoenix, 92-74, two days later to get off to a 2-0 start.
