"Our family has always enjoyed traveling, and with just one cat, hiring a sitter was manageable. But when we added two dogs to our family, boarding became a more practical solution."
PET hotels may not be uncommon in many parts of the world, but for some, they remain a luxury or even unnecessary. However, for pet lovers who need a safe place for their pets while traveling or leaving town, a pet hotel can offer much-needed relief.
"Our family has always enjoyed traveling, and with just one cat, hiring a sitter was manageable," shared Scion Mangubat, owner of Ruffhouse Stay and Play Pet Hotel, located in Santa Rosa, Laguna. It is believed to be the first and only facility of its kind in Southern Luzon.
"But when we added two dogs to our family, boarding became a more practical solution. We quickly realized, however, that there wasn't a pet hotel that met the standards of care we were looking for — especially since my daughter, a veterinarian, is very particular about animal welfare. That realization sparked the idea of creating something that would fill this gap.
"In January, we began developing the concept for a holistic pet hotel that would provide both peace of mind for pet owners and the level of care we felt was missing."
Ruffhouse Stay and Play Pet Hotel officially opened its doors on Nov. 23, offering 19 suites for dogs and 10 for cats.
"Our facility includes a spacious indoor play area, playcare services, and soon, two outdoor dog runs," said Mangubat. "As a family-owned business, we treat every pet like our own."
The pet hotel is led by Mangubat's daughter, Imma, a licensed veterinarian who oversees operations. "With Imma's expertise, we ensure the highest standards of care. Our team is trained and certified in Low Stress Handling techniques and pet CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), so every pet receives gentle and compassionate care throughout their stay," Mangubat explained.
Ruffhouse has gone above and beyond in its design and services, exceeding US animal welfare standards.
Its advanced ventilation system ensures fresh and clean air, while in-suite surveillance cameras allow pet owners to monitor their pets 24/7. Each pet guest is also equipped with a GPS tracker to enable real-time monitoring.
The facility spans an indoor area of approximately 365 square meters and operates 24/7.
A dedicated team — including three pet hosts per shift, a resident veterinarian and two front-desk staff — ensures consistent care and attention for all guests.
"Our location in Eton City, Santa Rosa, was carefully chosen for its balance of tranquility and accessibility," Mangubat noted.
"It's far enough from the hustle of Metro Manila to provide a peaceful retreat for pets, yet close enough to key destinations like Tagaytay and Batangas. Positioned between Metro Manila and the south, it's easily accessible for pet owners traveling in either direction."
Ruffhouse caters to both dogs and cats, with generously sized suites that can comfortably accommodate even large-breed dogs weighing over 100 pounds. For families with multiple pets, the hotel offers connecting suites, ensuring ample space for every guest.
"Our greatest challenge wasn't just hiring staff but finding the right people who truly aligned with our values," Mangubat shared. "Building a team that's fully committed to the level of care we strive to provide takes time and trust."
Imma Mangubat, who is also certified in Low Stress Handling, plays a pivotal role in training the team on proper care, handling and leash-walking techniques, particularly for pets requiring extra attention.
In addition to managing the business, Scion Mangubat balances her responsibilities as a doctor of nursing practice and a certified integrative mental health professional. Despite the demands of her work, she remains deeply committed to her vision for Ruffhouse.
"We're incredibly proud to be raising the bar for pet care," Mangubat said. "Right now, we're focused on refining and perfecting our services to ensure unmatched quality before even considering expansion. Building this business has been one of the most fulfilling journeys, especially knowing we're making a difference in the lives of pets and their families."
She added, "Running a business comes with immense responsibility. From managing day-to-day operations to ensuring pets receive the best care, the pressure can be overwhelming at times. But seeing pets thrive and earning the trust of their owners makes it all worthwhile."
When not at work, Mangubat cherishes moments with her family.
"We love hosting dinner parties at home, exploring hidden gem restaurants and discovering new culinary delights," she shared.
"And of course, there's nothing better than coming home to our own beloved pets, who inspire us every day and are at the heart of everything we do at Ruffhouse."
Mangubat also credits her extended family and friends for their unwavering support. "Almost everyone in our circle owns pets, and their perspectives have been invaluable in bringing Ruffhouse to life. Their excitement and word-of-mouth recommendations have played a key role in helping us grow. We're incredibly fortunate to have such a supportive community."
As Ruffhouse Stay and Play Pet Hotel continues to flourish, Mangubat remains focused on her mission: to create a safe, loving environment for pets and their families.
