There was a time in my adolescence when I had an obsession with having my own room, and I would guess all kids approaching their teens could relate, regardless of what generation they belonged to and what made-up language they spoke. Having your own space was just so cool, or rizz! Did I use that right? Anyway, I think this is a behavior among young people that stood the test of time. Think about it. Didn't you also obsess about having your very own room that actually had a real door with a lock, specifically when you were about to enter your teens? And for what? Well, your guess is as good as mine.Or let's just say, privacy. And leave it at that. Going back to my story, I was so obsessed with having my own room that as soon as I was old enough to have one, I would do everything in it, including sleeping in it, despite not having air-conditioning. You see, in the early '90s, the middle class would normally own just one AC and have it installed in the master bedroom. Whew! Talk about dedication! One of my favorite things to do in my room was to watch movies on my VHS player. The VHS came after the Betamax and before the laserdisc. Look it up, kids! And my all-time favorite movie to watch was 'Home Alone.' The very first one that is. Such a classic! I would watch it over and over again to the point that I memorized every line and every character's nuances. In fact, that look on Fuller's face holding a can of Pepsi still haunts me to this day. IYKYK! Another memorable character was Mrs. McCallister, marvelously portrayed by the great Catherine O'Hara and that iconic: 'KEVVVVVVIIIIIINNN!' scene. That scene of hers with John Candy singing in the back of the truck toward the end of the movie still makes me chuckle every time I am reminded of it. And speaking of Catherine O'Hara, she starred in a recent series, 'Schitt's Creek,' where she played the undeniable Moira Rose. She played both these characters which were so different from each other exceptionally well and with so much ease, you wouldn't think she was the same person. I accidentally stumbled upon her when my partner, Nim, was rewatching the show for the nth time, and I was hooked watching her. Moira Rose had an excellent turn of phrase; she was a joy to watch! The term 'turn of phrase' refers to the way a person expresses himself or herself through words. That said, we can describe turns of phrases in different ways, like weird, good, not so good and so on. And one thing's for sure: Moira Rose's is the gold standard we should all aim to have.
