The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has been honoured at The Hong Kong Institute of Directors' inaugural Climate Governance Awards, securing wins in both the "Listed Company – Executive Directors" and "Listed Company – Boards" categories, making it the only company to receive dual recognition in the field of climate governance.
The inaugural Climate Governance Awards, organised by The Hong Kong Institute of Directors, recognises company directors who actively participate in climate initiatives and lead their teams in addressing both challenges and opportunities presented by climate change.
Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, Managing Director of Towngas, expressed that the Company's Board of Directors has been leading the Company with forward-thinking climate response strategies. While maintaining its core business of providing safe and reliable clean energy, Towngas has recently expanded into new energy ventures, now supplying green methanol, hydrogen, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for marine, land, and air transportation as well as industrial applications, helping various sectors reduce carbon emissions. He expressed deep honour in receiving the two awards, viewing them as recognition of the Company's efforts in promoting low-carbon green transformation. "All Board members will continue to lead our team forward, focusing on innovation in green smart energy and integrating sustainability principles into every aspect of our operations, contributing to low-carbon transformation both in Hong Kong and globally. I firmly believe that through innovative thinking, we can create a better green energy future."
The Company's first green hydrogen project in Hong Kong, located at the South East New Territories Landfill Extension in Tseung Kwan O, is expected to produce its first batch of locally manufactured green hydrogen next year. As Asia's first enterprise to mass-produce ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certified green methanol, the Company will increase its green methanol production capacity, working with Foran Energy to establish production bases in Inner Mongolia, the Greater Bay Area, Hainan, and Fujian. Additionally, EcoCeres, a Towngas subsidiary, is constructing an additional SAF production facility in Malaysia, scheduled for completion and operation next year, to help ease the global aviation industry's urgent demand for SAF.
Towngas integrates Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations, including climate governance, into its daily operations. The Board of Directors holds overall responsibility for overseeing key ESG issues and manages them through the Board ESG Committee, which is specifically tasked with managing and ensuring effective oversight of ESG-related matters. The remuneration packages of the Managing Director and senior executives are linked to major ESG issues, including climate change response, to enhance ESG performance.
As one of Hong Kong's first enterprises to actively address climate change risks, Towngas conducted risk assessments for its high-risk assets in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland in 2015 and 2016 respectively, even before the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework was released. The Company has since taken the lead in addressing nature-related risks and opportunities. Looking ahead, the Company will continue its efforts to combat climate change, actively building low-carbon sustainable communities through energy transition.
