THE Church is on a new calendar, and the liturgical year has commenced anew with the Advent season. Obscured by the anticipation and excitement over the approaching Christmas, Advent has seldom received the attention it deserves.
Advent proclaims Christian faith in consummation. Existence moves toward consummation. An endless cycle of repetition holds no promise and might very well be the curse of damnation itself. Even eternal life, ill-conceived as endless life, does not, in itself, draw hope. Anyone who reads a novel follows the plot assiduously, looking forward to the conclusion — and the sense that it all makes. The exercise of a profession or of an art can be protracted, but, always, there is longing for fulfillment and completion.
