IN my early days as a journalism student and apprentice, my editor used to tell me that I should welcome assignments and events that test the adequacy or range of my English vocabulary. He philosophized that such assignments would force me to hunt for fresh words to describe situations and free me from predictable and hackneyed language. A little more verbal dexterity will do wonders for my copy.
