A volcanic eruption near Iceland's capital continues its dramatic display into the night on Nov. 21, 2024 sending fountains of lava and massive plumes of smoke into the air. The eruption, represented the tenth such event in the Reykjanes Peninsula in the past three years, underscoring the area's geological activity. As dusk descended, the volcanic performance showed no signs of calming down, continuing its fiery show into the evening. The first signs of the eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula were recorded just 45 minutes before a massive ground fissure, now estimated to be around 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) long, was opened by magma forcing its way through the earth's crust, Iceland's meteorological office said. The volcano roared to life on the night of Nov. 20, 2024 night, with the eruption estimated to be significantly smaller than the previous one, Iceland's meteorological office said.
