THE 29th United Nations Climate Conference is underway in Baku, Azerbaijan. But what is there to hope for, honestly? As Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama pointed out, "Our speeches, full of good words about fighting climate change, change nothing."
Leaders of small island nations that are facing possible obliteration appeal for solidarity. "We do not — cannot — accept that our survival is merely an option," Philip Edward Davis, prime minister of Bahamas, said in his speech quoted by Euro News. The climate crisis "demands continuity, commitment and most of all, solidarity." Davis lamented the "whims of political cycles" that hold meaningful and urgent climate action hostage.
