KOTA KINABALU — What was bound to happen has finally arrived: Donald Trump was once again elected president of the United States. In the US and abroad, reactions are mixed, with some delighted and others concerned. No one is perhaps happier than Trump himself, as he spent the past four years feeling that he had not been able to fully realize his ambitions during his first term as president, with many of his beloved policies left unfinished. Now, with another four years ahead, he has the opportunity to take bold action once again and pursue his political and economic aspirations.
On the other hand, in recent years, Trump has been entangled in multiple criminal lawsuits with both federal and state-level prosecutions, facing charges ranging from involvement in hush money payments and inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, US Capitol riots to attempting to interfere with the 2020 presidential election vote counts and improperly handling confidential documents, among others. Now that Trump is president again, his federal charges will likely be dropped, and state-level prosecutions against him will become much more difficult to pursue. Therefore, at least for the next four years, Trump will likely find himself in a much more relaxed position regarding these cumbersome legal matters.
