READ: China hits, US backs new PH maritime law

NEW laws defining the country's maritime zones and archipelagic boundaries drew fire from China while eliciting support from the United States late Friday. Beijing summoned the Philippine ambassador to China to lodge formal protests over the enactment of the "Maritime Zones Act" and the "Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act," which it said includes territories claimed by China. In a ceremony in Malacañang, the President signed the Republic Act (RA) 12064, the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, and RA 12065, or the Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act. In his speech, Marcos said the two new laws would assert the country's rights as an archipelagic state while fulfilling its obligations under international law.

SPORTS: Chot: TNT's PBA title 'satisfying'

CHOT Reyes can't help but describe TNT's championship conquest of the PBA Governors' Cup as "satisfying," personally and as a team. Just over a year ago, Reyes went through a tumultuous and challenging coaching stretch while preparing Gilas Pilipinas and, eventually, handling the national squad's stint in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Basketball fans had high expectations for a Philippine team that first regained the Southeast Asian Games men's gold in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in May 2023, while months later, ended with a close defeat to the Karl-Anthony Towns-led Dominican Republic, Angola and Italy, bowed to South Sudan in the classification round before closing the tournament with a 96-75 victory over China. Shortly after beating the Chinese, Reyes announced that he was leaving the Gilas coaching post, which later paved the way for Tim Cone to be appointed the new head coach. Cone would win the gold medal at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China later that year.
