THANK you to the readers who sent email messages and reposted my column the other day titled "The great Midwest of the United States." The thesis of that column is that there is still a great middle America that candidates have to woo and win if ever they want to land the White House.

A corollary thesis is that the United States might not be ready for a Black woman to lead them. How about Barack Obama? Someone asked me. But Mr. Obama was half-white, with a white American mother and a Kenyan father. Whatever you say about the United States, the gender divide is still there. And to some extent, the racial card.
