THAT is, assuming that he was not just playing politics during the presidential campaign. If there has been anything significant to this column about the American presidential election, it is Trump's oft repeated braggadocio that he will end world wars in 24 hours.

Indeed, as he had boasted, during his previous term, there had been no war in Ukraine, there had been no war in Palestine, no war in Lebanon. Only after he failed in his reelection bid and Joe Biden took over Washington had those wars exploded and begun escalating into what many perceived as the ultimate, mutually annihilative nuclear confrontation. The clear resolve of Iran now to take up the cause of Hezbollah and Hamas against Israel certainly could bring the warring forces closer to the abyss.
