LIKE most countries worldwide, we are watching the US presidential election unfold with bated breath. Indeed, it is one cliffhanger — one that can lead to a potential recalibration of global power dynamics. More importantly, given our longstanding alliance, the outcome can have significant implications for Philippine security.

The US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty is the linchpin of our defense framework. It means that shifts in US foreign policy can affect our joint activities. After the Military Bases Agreement with the US was terminated in 1991, we saw it fit to approve a Visiting Forces Agreement, expand our "balikatan" exercises, and enhance our hand-in-glove posture in the Indo-Pacific region. A US administration focused on countering influence from countries like China might increase support for defense initiatives in the Philippines. On the other hand, one that prioritizes different regions or issues might result in a less visible military presence.
