THE popular narrative for many years about the proclamation of Philippine independence in Kawit, Cavite, was that it was the first time that the national flag was hoisted and the national anthem was played publicly. That the flag was hoisted there for the first time has long been debunked, but apparently, even the national anthem had its premiere elsewhere.
