Nations meet for key climate talks

PARIS — World leaders kick off UN climate talks next week, days after a knife edge US election that could send shock waves through global efforts to limit dangerous warming.

The stakes are high for the COP29 conference in Azerbaijan where nations must agree on a new target to fund climate action across huge swathes of the world.

Experts say warmer temperatures across the Alps driven by climate change are accelerating glacier melt and thawing permafrost — the year-round ice found at high altitude that binds together giant slabs of rock. This has increased the danger of sudden rockfalls and landslides, damaging paths and adding stress to the mountains' often-ageing huts. PHOTO BY KERSTIN JOENSSON/AFP
