MANY retired generals of the Armed Forces of the Philippines have carved for themselves careers in the government and private sectors after retirement. Almost all are cavaliers or alumni of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). Only a few are integrees.
I met Maj. Gens. Rufo de Veyra and Melchor Rosales at a recent social gathering. Boots was my senior military assistant when I was defense secretary, and Mel was also an adviser and mentor in the firing range. Both had previously served as superintendent of the PMA.
