Comelec says social media watch a challenge

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) admitted that its move to regulate or prohibit the use of certain forms of social media, artificial intelligence and internet technology for digital campaigns in the 2025 polls would be a big challenge owing to its limited manpower and resources.

Chairman George Erwin Garcia said the Comelec needs to monitor more than 44,000 candidates in the 2025 election, adding that if each candidate has 10 official social media accounts, that would mean 440,000 such accounts.'We don't have enough personnel, and we also don't have enough resources to monitor 440,000 social media accounts,' Garcia pointed out, adding that the Comelec needs support, particularly from the public, to effectively regulate the use of social media for political campaigns.
