DURING midterm elections, focus is on the senatorial candidates and historically, the Filipino people's satisfaction with the sitting president and the strength of the opposition forces dictate the outcome of the race.
In the 2019 midterm elections, the pro-administration Hugpong ng Pagbabago coalition dominated with nine winning candidates, including former Philippine National Police chief Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa and special assistant to the president Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go, both of whom are reelectionists in 2025. The remaining three slots went to reelectionists Grace Poe (independent, 2nd place) and Maria Lourdes "Nancy" Binay (United Nationalist Alliance, or UNA), and returning senator Manuel "Lito" Lapid (Nationalist People's Coalition, 7th place). Binay barely made the cut at 12th place edging out fellow reelectionists Joseph Victor "JV" Ejercito and Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV.
