AMID the natural jubilation among Filipinos over the Holy See's appointment of a new Filipino cardinal, political confusion seems to reign and doubt persists that this Catholic country could hold fair and free, and meaningful midterm elections in May 2025. They see a number of obstacles to a smooth and meaningful conduct of the polls. Among them are the following:

1. Foreign intervention. The elections will continue to be run by a foreign election provider. This is a grave constitutional and political error. The election of national and local officials of a particular country is the sovereign right and duty of the citizens of that country, untarnished by the participation of any foreign entity.
