A NEW benefit package of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) is a groundbreaking step toward addressing the scourge of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) among children, which afflicts an estimated 1.5 million children in the country.

SAM is the most dangerous form of undernutrition and can leave children extremely thin, weak and unable to fight off infections. Without early identification and immediate intervention, SAM can quickly lead to death. Even if the child survives, it can lead to stunting later on.
