NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captures on Oct. 3, 2024 an X9-class solar flare, the strongest of this solar cycle, in two ultraviolet wavelengths. According to NASA, these solar flares are intense releases of energy from the Sun which can impact 'radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.' Thursday 3 is known as an X9-class flare. NASA said that X-class flares were the most intense and that the number indicated their intensity. On February 22, NASA captured an X6.3 flare.
