Protection of civilians urged as Mideast violence worsens

GENEVA, Switzerland — The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Wednesday urged those involved in the escalating conflict in the Middle East to follow international humanitarian law and protect infrastructure and civilians caught in the fighting.

In a statement, ICRC chief spokesman Christian Cardon called on the warring parties 'to pull back from the precipice of a wider regional conflict that would plunge communities already affected by violence deeper into crisis.'
