THE President recently signed into law the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, which accordingly provides a legal framework that ensures the protection and welfare of Filipino seafarers. Although this is a welcome protection that addresses many of the pressing concerns of our seafarers, this once again aims to strengthen the OFW migration that has continued to beset our country for several decades now.

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have been heralded and branded by the government as modern-day heroes due to the macroeconomic impact of their remittances aside from the direct monetary benefits to their families. An astounding $36.14 billion in remittances was recorded in 2022 alone, nearly 10 percent of the country's GDP.
