Pirates down Cardinals for 3rd straight win

MANILA, Philippines — Lyceum of the Philippines University extended its winning streak to three after fending off last season's runner-up Mapua University, 96-81, in the NCAA Season 100 men's basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Lyceum also ended Mapua's three-game winning spree.
The Cardinals, who led in the first three quarters, failed to contain their lead in the payoff period as back-to-back buckets by Vincent Cunanan gave the Pirates a 69-66 lead.
The Cardinals and the Pirates traded baskets in the early minutes of the fourth canto but the Pirates started to pull away as Mclaude Guadaña and Jonathan Dialeg conspired to give Lyceum a 78-70 lead.
Mapua tried to regain its advantage but Lyceum kept the Cardinals at bay and claimed the win.

'It feels good, and I feel very happy about how my players did well in the game. They give their all and their best for today's match,' head coach Gilbert Malabanan said after the game.
John Barba finished with 25 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates, while Guadaña and Cunanan added 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Daileg, who scored nine points in the fourth quarter, tallied 14 points for Lyceum.
Jeco Bancale led the scoring for Mapua with 14 points.
