THE Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is set to undergo a transformative overhaul aimed at improving mobility and modernizing air travel in the Philippines. The New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), a consortium led by San Miguel Corp. (SMC) and Incheon International Airport Corp., has taken over NAIA's management and operations, committing P170 billion to bring the airport up to global standards.
The modernization of NAIA, a critical gateway for both international and domestic travelers, promises to solve long-standing issues such as overcrowding and outdated infrastructure. One of the key goals of the project is to increase the airport's passenger capacity from 43 million to 62 million annually, significantly easing congestion. Air traffic movement is also set to improve, with the number of flights increasing from 42 to 48 per hour, allowing more efficient movement of people and goods.
