German economy minister offers help to Volkswagen to avoid site closures
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck says on Sept. 20, 2024 that he wants to help Volkswagen get through a period of cost-cutting without site closures. During a visit to the carmaker's factory in Emden, the minister said he also wanted to ensure that personnel policy measures remained within the normal collective bargaining framework. A VW union representative said workers were feeling resigned and angry at the situation because of the looming closures and the lack of job security. However, the minister said there were limits to what his government could do to support Volkswagen and that a large part of the tasks have to be dealt with by Volkswagen itself.
