A series of deadly wildfires in Portugal has overwhelmed emergency services. In the Viseu district, flames near the village of Povoa Montemuro were seen racing through vegetation on Sept. 18, 2024 threatening the area with alarming speed. Authorities confirmed that much-needed reinforcements arrived from Spain and Morocco, offering some relief as cooler weather improved conditions to fight the flames. At least seven people have died due to the blazes in the Aveiro and Viseu districts, with dozens of houses destroyed and tens of thousands of hectares of forest and scrubland consumed.
