Spain fueled the birth of Filipino nationalism

OBSERVER

First word

THE poor textbook writing and teaching of Filipino history during over four centuries of colonial rule has not been clear-eyed and even-handed. While they invariably heap credit on America for bringing civil government and democracy and the English language into our national life, they tend to gloss over Spain's contribution to the political culture while highlighting the despotism and cruelties of Spanish colonial rule that martyred so many of our heroes, including Jose Rizal.
