TO the great disappointment and sadness of the KOJC faithful — whose religious and education complex was besieged by 3,000 policemen for 16 days — and whose right to life, liberty, security and property was wantonly and continuously violated for more than two weeks by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in enforcing the warrant of arrest against Pastor Apollo Quiboloy — the 22nd Division of the Court of Appeals junked the writ of amparo issued by Branch 15 of the Regional Trial Court of Davao City on Aug. 27, 2024, against the PNP and in favor of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) religious group.
While the surrender of Pastor Quiboloy to the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP) on Sept. 9, 2024, and the subsequent withdrawal of the PNP assault troops ended the siege of the KOJC and effectively stopped the acts complained against in the writ of amparo, there is however a necessity for the Supreme Court to rule on the legal issues raised there even if the petition may have been rendered moot and academic by the aforesaid Davao RTC that issued the writ of amparo, and the alleged unlawful acts committed by the PNP in serving the arrest warrant.
