NONPARTISAN American historians who have ranked United States presidents according to their perceived greatness or depravity share the consensus that Donald Trump, the country's 45th president, is the worst in US history. His central role in the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol was considered his vilest act. The 34 felonies he was convicted of, his racism, and his bigotry actually counted as lesser crimes.

But such a dismal ranking does not mean Trump did not have signature achievements during his term as president. His big push for Operation Warp Speed facilitated the development of a coronavirus vaccine that saved a lot of lives in the US and elsewhere. His push to have North Atlantic Treaty Organization members spend more for global security was long overdue. Defending the democratic world is and has always been an act of shared sacrifice and responsibility.
