THE Ukrainian offensive into Russian territory itself through Kursk, which began in August 2024, took many by surprise, including Russian officials, and led to the swift capture of key areas. The offensive was seen as a bold move by Kyiv to try to stretch Russian forces across multiple fronts to ease pressure on the Donbas region.

Experienced war strategists had warned that it was a foolish PR stunt, as Ukraine no longer had the factors allowing a surprise incursion to succeed, such as highly experienced manpower and extensive munitions. Ukraine has to scrounge and force its population to join the armed forces that are losing all around the front in both Russia and the Eastern Ukraine fronts.
