THE 74-year-old boss of the organization he established in 1985 examined the four executives he had brought with him to the retreat — one man and three women.

The old man was like a god in his kingdom — but he still valued having the right lieutenants in place. Hence, he thought, this was as good a time as any to do some team-building exercises.
