I MOURN the passing of former Negros Occidental governor Daniel "Bitay" Lacson Jr., an outstanding La Salle College Bacolod classmate (from grade school to high school 1961-1965). According to a published report, Bitay died peacefully in his home surrounded by family — his wife, Tima Sarabia Lacson, and their children, RJ, Patrick, Carla, Teepee and Ria. He succumbed to a brain tumor at the age of 77.

Bitay's legacy goes beyond his tangible achievements. His leadership was marked by a quiet strength, the kind that inspired others to rise to their best selves. He led with integrity, always maintaining a clear moral compass even in the most challenging times. Throughout his tenure, he was known for his relentless focus on improving agricultural productivity, particularly in the sugar industry, ensuring that Negros Occidental remained a cornerstone of the national economy. His initiatives in infrastructure development and education were not just policies but testaments to his enduring belief in the power of progress and unity.
