THE Porsche 911 is arguably the most iconic model of the German sports car manufacturer. Since its inception in 1964, the 911 has become one of the longest-standing and most storied sports car nameplates in the world. However, this doesn't diminish the appeal of the Porsche Boxster and Cayman, which evolved into the 718 models in 2016. While some may see them as the alternative for those who can't afford a 911, the 718, particularly in its GT4 RS and Spyder RS variants, might actually be more potent sports cars than their 911 counterparts, depending on your perspective.
This advantage starts with the size of these two models. Measuring 4,379 mm from tip to stern, the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and Spyder RS are nearly 200 mm shorter than their 911 counterparts. Combined with a shorter wheelbase, lighter weight, and the race-derived 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine from the 911 GT3, these two 718 RS models are arguably the purest expression of a Porsche sports car in 2024.
