THE global media spotlight has turned back to the Ukraine-Russia conflict with Ukraine's incursion into the border regions of mainland Russia. It was a bold and spectacular move. No foreign country has dared to invade Russia since Hitler's failed Operation Barbarossa. Ukraine has claimed to have placed under its control more Russian territory in a few days than Russia has Ukrainian territory under its control in two years.

As of this writing, Ukraine continues to advance deeper into Russia. On their way, Ukraine forces destroy the bridges and railways by which Russia conveys military supplies to its forces in Ukraine and airfields from which Russia launches missiles and fighter planes to Ukraine. Ukraine has already destroyed one-third of Russia's oil refineries, forcing Russia, the world's biggest oil producer, to import refined oil. Ukraine may continue to destroy the remaining ones in an effort to make Russians realize the effect on their lives of President Vladimir Putin's "special military operation," especially this coming winter, which is expected to be very cold.
