(UPDATE) LOS ANGELES, California — Californians were warned on Tuesday to prepare to swelter as a fearsome heat wave settles over the western American state.
The mercury was forecast to top out at a scorching 113 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius) in parts of Los Angeles later in the week, marking the high point of an already hot summer.
