Mapua University wins tech innovation award at Shell Eco-marathon

FILIPINO ingenuity was on full display as seven student teams represented the Philippines at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and Middle East 2024, held at the Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, Indonesia.

Among the standout teams were Mapua University's Cardinal One, which took home the coveted Technical Innovation Award for their creative use of technology in vehicle design.
Teams from Jose Rizal University (Team Siklab), De La Salle University (Eco Archers), University of Mindanao (UMindanao Wildcats), and Adamson University (Team Kalasag) also successfully cleared the rigorous technical inspection and had the chance to run their energy-efficient vehicles on the track. Even though teams like Xavier University's XU Mekan-Eco and Polytechnic University of the Philippines' Hygears didn't advance to the final stages, they still gained valuable experience, showing their commitment and determination in a highly competitive environment.
Cardinal One's victory in securing the Technical Innovation Award highlighted the students' ability to push the boundaries of vehicle design, incorporating advanced technologies to make their car more efficient and forward-thinking. Their achievement reflects the creativity and dedication of young Filipino innovators on the global stage.
The competition, which challenges students to design ultra-efficient vehicles, saw teams building cars that ran on innovative energy sources such as battery-electric power, hydrogen fuel cells, and internal combustion engines using alternative fuels. It wasn't just about winning on the track as the teams were also recognized for their efforts in categories like safety, sustainability, and teamwork.
Norman Koch, Global General Manager of Shell Eco-marathon, was impressed with the students' efforts. 'It's amazing to see the next generation of thinkers and innovators tackling real-world challenges. Despite facing tough competition, they delivered outstanding work in creating energy-efficient vehicles,' he said.
The event celebrated more than just technological achievements; it was a chance for students to showcase their hard work, learn from each other, and contribute to the future of sustainable transportation. The next Shell Eco-marathon will be held in Doha, Qatar, continuing the tradition of pushing the limits of energy efficiency.
